Launch Day
With the company launching soon, I had to try and remember all the blood, sweat and tears I put into this company. When starting out, I knew I wanted to work with a shiny, silk blend material. It reminded me of professional combat sports athletes, who like to show off their braggadocious personalities through their clothes, when they try to sell fights. I also wanted to ensure that this company stays on the path of ethics, making sure that Sherezaad never falls into sweatshops and exploitative production methods. We treat our tailors like family, sometimes even offering them transpiration, extra pay and extra time off during holidays, so they can be with their families.
Sherezaad has been, and is, an intense experience. From planning to stitching, the art of making clothes takes a lot of back and forth between the creative brain and the creating brain. Oftentimes, what one envisions to be the perfect dress falls short, meaning that the creative brain has to return to the drawing board. Constraints in clothing are commonplace, although I like to test those boundaries as much as I can.
Our motto has always been handcrafted apparel. Instead of choosing pre-made fabrics, we are often involved in the process of dying and hand pleating our dresses just the way we want. In our current world, fashion is a serious responsibility in terms of aesthetics and business practices. I hope people can take as much joy in experiencing our clothes, as I have had in making them.
